Centrestage Cymru Revisit Hollywood's Golden Era With Singing In The Rain

Visitors to Tredegar House could have recently been forgiven for thinking that a new television costume drama was been filmed at the Newport landmark’s location. However, the filming that was taking place were cinematic scenes for Newport musical theatre company, Centrestage Cymru’s, forthcoming production of the classic musical Singing in the Rain recalling the early days of Hollywood.
Jordan Archer and Zoe Southcott prepare for a scene
Singing in the Rain will feature hilarious situations, snappy dialogue, and a hit-parade score of Hollywood standards making a perfect evening of entertainment for any fan of the golden age of movie musicals.

Singing in the Rain has all the makings of a Tinseltown tabloid headline - the starlet, the leading man and a love affair that could change lives and make or break careers. In silent movies, Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are a hot item, but behind the scenes things aren’t always as they appear on the big screen. Meanwhile, Lina’s squeaky voice might be the end of her career in “talking pictures” without the help of a talented young actress to do the talking and singing for her.

Centrestage actresses prepare for a take
CentreStage Cymru Chairperson Sharon Higgins, Stage director Peter Higgins, Vice Chairman Andre Paul Spring along with nine cast members spent a day of filming the black and white Singing in the Rain film sequences along with filming director/camera man Martin Phillips of film company, Red90.

“I’m not sure what visitors to the house thought as we arrived dressed in Period costumes, wigs and brandishing swords,” said Sharon Higgins, “many of the visitors followed us and enjoyed watching us film. Although it was cold the actors had a fabulous time and it’s an experience I am sure they will remember.”

The Centrestage Cymru team felt the setting of Tredegar House’s gardens were perfect for their location shoot, “I must say a huge thank you to Tredegar House for allowing us to use their beautiful grounds,” said Sharon, “also to Anwen Roberts for her help and Chris Edmunds who looked after us on the day. We’re looking forward to seeing the finished sequences in our show now.”

Feelgood Musical Summer Holiday Comes To Newport's Dolman Theatre

Phoenix Productions are staging the hit musical Summer Holiday, based on the classic Cliff Richard film at Newport's Dolman Theatre from February 25.

Phoenix Productions are a newly named company, previously National Academy of Performing Arts, brought you award winning shows such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Footloose, Les Miserables and many more. Now under new management, the company are set to wow the audience with their interpretation of the feel good Cliff Richard musical. With their incredible cast, directors and set (including a full scale Red London bus) the group are all set to start their new theatrical journey.

Andy Howells recently put questions to four of the leading stars of Summer Holiday, Conor and Ben Donovan, Laura Honeybun and Geri McNamara.

Which role are you playing in Summer Holiday?
Conor: I will be playing the part of Cyril, he always wants to have fun and is the more childish one out of the 4 boys!
Ben: I'm playing the role of Edwin in this production. He's the intelligent and more sensible character out of the three boys. He knows a lot about everything and is the love interest of Alma. He gets along well with all of the characters and is very fun to play.
Laura: The role I am playing in Summer Holiday is one of the trio called Angie who is in charge of the group and the girls look up to and also has a great and comical connection with Cyril.
Geri: I play the character Barbara Winters.

What do you enjoy most of all about musical theatre?
Conor: I love how you can explore a characters life and emotions through musical theatre. Becoming a character that is the complete polar opposite to you is so much fun and allows you to get a bigger insight on how different people react to different situations. There are so many musicals that teach you about current problems and it makes you more aware of things that are happening in today's society; while having SO much fun!
Ben: I love the creativity behind it and as cliché as it sounds the way you can express yourself. I love becoming different characters and taking on different roles to make an audience believe that I am that character.
Laura: What I enjoy about musical theatre is performing to an audience and getting an amazing atmosphere in show week and putting smiles on people's faces.
Geri: I love that I can do what I enjoy in front of an audience. Being able to communicate through song and dance is just so amazing.

What is the most exciting aspect of Summer Holiday for you?
Conor: I'm really excited about seeing the set, especially the bus and for the first time being in full costume and running the show! It's crazy how much costumes and set make your character stronger and make you feel like you ARE the character.
Ben: I love seeing a show coming together in general and this show hasn't been an exception. I love seeing songs and scenes coming together a whole and other cast members characters developing. I am also extremely excited about having a massive red London bus on stage too; it’s going to be so fun!
Laura: Performing Summer Holiday! I'm dedicating my performance to my auntie as she loved Cliff Richard and I love all his films so when I found out we was doing Summer Holiday I was thrilled to pieces.  I love all the songs with the cheesy dancing numbers, it would be nice to still have films like those today.
Geri: The most exciting aspect is being able to potentially play two characters in one. I find it exciting how my character has a secret lifestyle I also love all my characters songs and Barbara’s light-hearted personality.

Whats your favourite song from the show?
Conor: Time Drags By because it's such a calming, lovely song and the harmonies are (normally) spot on! Or, Let Us Take You For A Ride because it's such a dynamic, fun number.
Ben: My favourite song from the show has to be Let Us Take You for a Ride. Its a comedy number where the boys help fix Do Re Mi's broken car. I love the harmonies in the number and the overlap. It’s so fun to sing and sounds so good when all seven of us sing it.
Laura: Dancing Shoes as it is an upbeat song sang by the trio and it makes me happy and want to dance. Also Big News because I love the song and how it incorporates the characters and the journalists.
Geri: My favourite song would have to be Living Doll. It's so fun, upbeat and quirky and being able to do it accapella with the other characters gives it that extra edge.

Where would your dream Summer Holiday be and why?
Conor: New York! I'm so obsessed with the city after going there a couple of months ago, I'd love to go back!
Ben: I've recently travelled to New York in the USA, and absolutely loved it, so would love to go back again. I love the hustle and bustle of the city, the bright lights, huge buildings and Broadway!
Laura: Athens, like they do in Summer Holiday as I have never been there and that is the birth place of acting and musical theatre as well as exploring more parts of Italy as it is filled with many places to visit, packed with the finest food which I love to eat.
Geri: Florida, it's always somewhere I've wanted to go since I was little and it seems so enchanting and magical.
  • Summer Holiday takes to the stage of The Dolman Theatre, February 25th, 26th and 27th. Tickets available at The Dolman Theatre box office or online at www.dolmantheatre.co.uk.

Spooky Goings On With Centrestage Cymru As The Addams Family Come To Newport

Making its South Wales Premiere this week is Centrestage Cymru’s presentation of the musical comedy The Addams Family. A great show for the family the weird and wonderful Addams Family loved come to devilish, delightful life.

Based upon the original cartoon characters created by Charles Addams, The Addams Family have spawned numerous films and television adaptations and now the well loved characters are brought to life in a magical, fun stage musical.

In the words of the composer Andrew Lippa '' Each of the characters have a different style of music. The pastiche ranges from Spanish Flamenco to Blues/Jazz to Vaudeville and even a bit of Sondeim thrown into the pot''.

Andy Howells recently got the opportunity to put questions to a few of the spooky but cookie cast members.

Who are you playing in The Addams Family?
Jordan Archer: Uncle Fester
Hannah Roper: Wednesday Addams
Zoe Southcott: Grandma Addams
Michelle Meano: Morticia Addams
Charlie Turner: Pugsley Addams
Matt Bryant: Gomez Addams

What are you looking forward to most about the role?
Jordan Archer: Being bald and working with the whole cast.
Hannah Roper: Playing the snap changes in Wednesday’s personality. Going from Normal-ish one minute to utterly psychotic the next.
Zoe Southcott: Grandma Addams is absolutely off her head … I adore her. It’s like jumping in a time machine and visiting myself in 80 years time.
Michelle Meano: Being the Boss of the house (even though Gomez thinks he is!) Oh and of course Morticia’s costume.
Charlie Turner: I’m looking forward to being grumpy and sullen without being told off! I also can’t wait for my solo song, and to see how my torture scene is going to work!
Matt Bryant: Only having one costume!

The Addams Family was a popular TV series, which TV series would you like to be in and why?
Jordan Archer: Will & Grace because its one of the only shows that make me belly laugh.
Hannah Roper: Either Doctor Who or Sherlock because they are amazing! And bow ties are cool!
Zoe Southcott: Friends – Coffee every single day! I love coffee and WINE!
Michelle Meano: Why The Addams Family of course, who wouldn’t want to be Morticia!
Charlie Turner: I’d like to be one of the Dragons Den – I’d love to be rich enough to be able to say “I’m Out”!
Matt Bryant: I’d like to be in Top Gear as ‘The star in the reasonably priced car’ because The Stig is my Dad.

  • Catch The Addams Family at The Dolman Theatre, Newport until May 2nd, 2015 For more information about this performance, for more information about this performance or to book your tickets, you can visit the website at dolmantheatre.co.uk.

On Stage: Dick Barton - Special Agent, Dolman Theatre, Newport

Cue the Devil’s Gallop! Dick Barton-Special Agent is back, this time courtesy of Newport Playgoers musical-comedy presentation at The Dolman Theatre.

Barton aficionados will notice quite a change in the Phil Wilmot scripted show, as the legendary post-war radio detective breaks his own personal code-of-conduct several times as he is subjected to double entendres, drugs and even acquiring a femme fatale girlfriend.

The production however is a lot of fun from start to finish and a farcical/musical hall salute to the Britishness of radio drama in the 1940s/50s with a touch of Carry On thrown in for good measure.

Newport Playgoers presentation
of Dick Barton - Special Agent
Photograph: Phil Mansell
The smoky brown set resembles a BBC Radio recording studio from the 1940s. Richard Dymond, in dinner jacket, oversees the announcements on BBC microphones while Bruce Campbell adds comic effect on cue (or not as the mood may take) as the sound effects man.

Kevin Myers displays versatility as the hero, the suave Dick Barton and the slightly dim-witted sidekick Snowy White. Myers convincingly portrays two characters who at times become one while still maintaining a heroic demeanour. His highlight is saving the day with a tap-dance routine which gained a huge applause from the audience.

John Sheen adds fun as the strong arm working class assistant with a Scottish accent Jock Anderson, a comical highlight been his musical pairing on A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square with the frightfully wonderful Nicola Carlyle as Daphne Fritters.

The real show stealers though are the villains of the piece. Stephen Saunders delivers a convincingly caricatured portrayal of Baron Scarheart a criminal hell-bent on world domination, while the psychotic, seductive and sultry Marta Heartburn is played to perfection by Rosamund Jones-Griffiths, a natural comedienne who can deliver a perfect double entendre with a mere glint in her eye.

Dick Barton-Special Agent continues at The Dolman Theatre until Saturday January 18.

On Stage: Newport Playgoers Society - Fawlty Towers, Dolman Theatre

Newport Playgoers new season commenced on Tuesday evening with Jes Hynes' directorial debut of John Cleese and Connie Booth’s much loved classic sit-com Fawlty Towers.

One of the most popular comedy series ever to grace TV screens, a stage presentation of such an iconic show was indeed a risky one that ultimately paid off. In just under 90 minutes, the audience is treated to a prospective visit from hotel inspectors, difficult hotel guests, a chaotic fire drill and a visit from the Germans.

Alex Wilson’s portrayal of Basil Fawlty cleverly unfolds as a ticking time bomb of irrational behaviour duly opposed by his fearsome wife Sybil, played to perfection by Nicky Davies. Ryan Salter ducks and dives as Spanish waiter Manuel between scenarios, his classic comedy moment communicating via a moose’s head with The Major (David Eynon-Williams). Equally, Cathy Morgan as Polly gets a taste of comic action via quick-fire exchanges with Basil when attempting to hide his horse betting success from Sybil.

Of course, all this is topped off with Basil’s rude exchanges with the German guests continually mentioning the war and impersonating Hitler’s goose-step resulting in the audience falling apart with laughter.

Complemented with a replica set of the hotel and a talented supporting cast, complete with 70s-style garments, Fawlty Towers is a strong start to The Playgoers new season. Be certain to make a reservation before the production closes its doors on Saturday.

On Stage: A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum

Several funny things happened at the Dolman Theatre last night in Newport Playgoers musical production of A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum

Pseudolus, a Roman slave attempts to bargain his freedom with his master, Hero by tricking Lycus, a buyer and seller of lovely young courtesans into giving the beautiful Philea to his master even though she has already been bought by the ferocious Captain Miles Gloriousus. As Pseudolus devises a plan, chaos ensues and belly laughs are galore as the comedy unfolds.

Steve Gerrish heads the cast as Pseudolus, in a role originally brought to acclaim by Frankie Howerd in the West End and delivers comic timing to full effect in what is a physically demanding role encompassing song and dance routines and lots of movement.

There are many strong performances from supporting cast members, including Sam Williams as Hero and the delightful Victoria Currie as his love interest Philea. The pair steal the show with some wonderful vocal performances. Also of note were splendid performances from Chris Edmunds, Rob Jacob and Stephen Saunders as well as the three young Proteans who changed roles and costumes at lightning speeds. The Five Courtesans (see them dance!) also displayed much in the way a very appealing stage presence.

Anyone who thought classic comedy was dead can think again as A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum is alive and well  at the Dolman right up until September 15. Don’t miss it!
